Existential Therapy: The Courage to Be and to Find Meaning Again

What Is Existential Therapy and Why It Matters

When life starts to feel like a series of tasks instead of something you truly live, it’s easy to wonder: What’s the point? Existential therapy offers a space to explore that question, not as a crisis, but as a doorway. It’s a therapeutic approach grounded in philosophy, psychology, and the belief that meaning, freedom, and responsibility are at the heart of emotional wellbeing.

A. Therapy for When You Feel Stuck in “What Now?”

If you’re feeling anxious, disconnected, or uncertain about your direction, existential therapy can help you:

  • Clarify what truly matters to you — your values, priorities, and inner compass.
  • Reconnect with purpose when life feels mechanical or overwhelming.
  • Face transitions (career change, loss, relocation, burnout) with clarity and self-trust.
  • Rebuild authenticity: the sense of being you again.

Unlike structured approaches that aim to “fix” symptoms, existential therapy works by helping you understand the why behind them and the possibilities waiting beyond them!

How It Works: Meaning Before Methods

Existential therapy draws from phenomenology and existential philosophy, the study of human experience and the courage to live authentically in the face of uncertainty.
It’s guided by the question:

“What does it mean to live a life that feels like your own?”

Sessions combine reflective conversation with experiential and evidence-based techniques (e.g., mindfulness, behavioral experiments). You’ll learn to observe your emotions, clarify your choices, and act in alignment with your deeper values.

How is it different to other psychotherapeutic approaches? My motto is that all roads lead to Rome, to healing that is. The question is not if you can heal, but how, and with which co-traveller by your side. In that light, while modalities such us CBT may focus on changing thoughts and behaviors, and psychodynamic therapy explores the roots of our past relationships, existential therapy invites us to stay with the present i.e. the here and now of being alive.

It’s less about symptom management and more about reconstructing meaning, rediscovering direction, and reconnecting with what makes life feel truly yours.

Spiritual and Philosophical Depth

Many clients are surprised to find that existential therapy welcomes spiritual and philosophical exploration. Whether you follow a faith, identify as spiritual, or are questioning it all; your beliefs are not seen as barriers but as integral parts of your story.

In Short (TL;DR)

  • Existential therapy helps you live with purpose, not just manage anxiety.
  • It’s for anyone feeling lost, restless, or ready to reconnect with meaning.
  • It blends depth, structure, and self-awareness to bring real, lasting clarity.
